Description: Photowipe is a free program that can easily remove unwanted parts or elements of a digital image and “fill in” the gap algorithmically based on a the information in the areas/pixels surrounding it.
Have you ever had a perfect digital photograph that otherwise had a little detail that was completely off and that you wished you could remove? Say you’ve finally managed to get every member of your family posing and smiling in sync in front of a gorgeous backdrop, except down by the right hand corner a passerby’s foot and a little of their leg is intruding on the scene. Or let’s say that you’ve just taken a picture of your car that you want to sell on ebay; you’re about to post it when you suddenly see what you had somehow missed earlier, that a bird had mistaken your car for a toilet, leaving tiny but problematic traces on the roof and one of the left-side windows.
Enter Photowipe, a program designed to remove unwanted parts of an image. Here are some notes on this program:
Standalone program: not a plugin for another image editor.
Photowipe is extremely easy to use: blot the picture elements you do not want with black paint, then run (see screenshot).
The time it takes to process depends on the image, but is very fast (not more than a few seconds in my experience).
Examples where Photowipe works well: spots, blemishes wrinkles, dirty area of a photograph, etc. It can also work well for, say, removing small watermarks, (especially ones that may be placed in a corner of an image and that are not the main focus of the image). Another potential use would be with screenshots that may contain personal information that you might want to remove/hide, or hiding the features of people in an image to make them anonymous.
This program is well suited for removing little details, but when I tried to use this to remove a large part of a picture (an entire personwhich amounted to approx 25% of the area of the photo), the end result looked like a photograph that had acid poured on it.
The verdict: this is a fast and easy way to remove unwanted elements from an image. It works fairly well, especially given that what it attempts to do is often not an easy task. For the best results you may still have to go over your processed image in an image editing program like Photoshop (or the freeware Gimpshop) and do a lot of manual manipulation. Still, in many cases the Photowipe intervention alone is sufficient, as in general it does a really good job.

WYSIWIG (what you see is what you get). It will download your site’s CSS and is able to preview exactly what your post will look like when published. The editing interface looks really good and is very well designed.
Built in spelling checker.
Instantly switch from normal view to the HTML code and to ‘web preview’.
Tags Tags Tags! Enter tags straight from the Windows Live Writer interface. For Wordpress check out this plugin that will work with the Windows Live Writer tags for both tag and metakeyword support.
Nice handling of images, including a slew of unexpected options such as the ability to rotate an image, adjusting brightness, setting height/width of an image and the margin around it (if any), as well as a handful of border styles. It seems that you can import more effects capabilities through downloadable plugins. Paradoxically, for all of this I was unable to tell the program to use a thumbnail instead of the actual resized image, a glaring omission in my book.
Tags Tags Tags! Enter tags straight from the Windows Live Writer interface. For Wordpress check out this plugin that will work with the Windows Live Writer tags for both tag and metakeyword support.

My Windows Live Writer wishlist: this software is still in beta, and I suspect many of the following will be addressed, but here they are all the same.
Hard as I tried, I was not ablt to get Windows Live Writer to update a post to reflect changes that I did online AFTER publishing a post using Windows Live Writer.
The ability to specify posting thumbnail vs. original image, the way Wordpress does it. I want a 9k thumbnail that can be clicked to show the 100k image, not a resized 100k image within every post.
Currently, Windows Live Writer is unable to download previous posts past the tag, which is very strange and effectively makes it useless for editing already published posts. This has to be fixed urgently.
For such a foray into WYSIWYG blogging, I am stumped as to why there is no support for creating tables on the fly. I mean if I AM using a local client it might as well be powerful.
For posted images, Windows Live Writer creates its own folder structure within the Wordpress ‘Uploads’ folder. Which is okay, but I do wish that it stuck with the Wordpress folder structure instead.
I wish the program has more warning dialogs such as “you are about to delete this post; both local and published versions will be affected, are you sure you want to do this”. Or something like that. This would have prevented my deletion of a published post
The verdict: One thing that I want to convey before I’m done is this program’s sheer coolness factor. Not sure what it is, but I really want Microsoft to fix the bugs/issues above so I can use this as my default blogging software. As is it probably deserves a 4 star rating but I am crossing my finders and giving it the benefit of the doubt and the max rating anyway.

Description: Wakoopa is a community website that provides information on what programs and applications its members are using. It installs a little memory-resident program that relays information on what programs are being used, the time periods and frequency of use. Users can then use the site to learn about popular software and/or leave their opinions in the form of mini-reviews or comments.
Wakoopa is intended to provide a great way to (a) peek inside people’s machines to see what software they are actually using, (b) learn about new programs that members may be using in order to test these myself, and (c) I thought it would be an excellent way find software mini-reviews and access the opinions and feedback of fellow users.
Here are some notes on this service:
Signing up: you don’t need to sign up to browse Wakoopa, but when you do you get your own profile page and can download the local client that will include your program usage in the database.
New versions: Wakoopa can tell you that there are newer versions of programs that you are using (similar service to Filehippo update checker).
Contacts: you can add your friends and/or other people to your profile in order to easily access their pages.
Mini Reviews: Wakoopa invites all users to author little mini reviews; these typically are just one and two liners though unfortunately.
Tags and categories: you can hone in on the kind of programs you’re interested in using tag and category clouds that are everywhere on the site. Not sure if the tagging is done automatically by comparing with some database or by editorial activity or both.
Security: if you don’t like your program usage behavior monitored or have doubts that the local client might relay more information than is declared then don’t sign up. You can still browse Wakoopa without registering, but remember the site will not have any content if everyone withholds sharing their information.
So how useful is this? In my experience I’ve found it to be interesting but not too interesting. It would be great if the makers of this implement features such as recommendations "we think you would like this based o people with similar usage profiles", or "if you use this/these programs, you might like the following programs". Also, it would be great if it told you what the license is for programs (freeware, shareware, commerical) and supplied links to the program pages.
The biggest concern for a service like, which only gets more useful and interesting as more and more people join and more data is collected, is that people don’t find it interesting enough to keep the local client alive and taking resources on their machine (even if it is a small 8 meg app). For a software fanatic like myself I know I will keep coming back and watching how this service changes and grows.

Because I wasn't able to make workarounds for some serious bugs in the Microsoft Windows Media Format SDK I decided do write from scratch ASF file reader and writer by myself. Today I released AkoCloud for Joomla! 1.0.x and Mambo 4.5.1+. The module automatically generates tag clouds from your content items. The tag cloud contains the most used words from your website sized by their amount of appearance. By clicking on one of the words, the user is redirect to the search page with results for this tag.

The module is highly configureable through the parameter system. You can choose the amount of tags, the sorting, the size for the smallest and the largest tag and many more. The opzimize results AkoCloud checks the result against the most common words of a language. I included english, german, french and dutch in this release. Further optimization is possible through a buildin black- and whitelist.

During TCP/IP transfer, a certain amount of data needs to be confirmed upon reception before more can be sent. Stalling data confirmation results in delays and transfer-rate slowdowns, thus forcing the sender to wait. Especially for ADSL, it is possible to slow a download to a crawl by choking the upstream channel (which has the smaller bandwidth anyway) with an upload. This is because in such a scenario there is not enough upstream bandwidth left for data confirmation.The standard solution so far has been to try and compensate for this by increasing TCP window size, thereby allowing more data to be sent without immediate confirmation. The main problem here is that this also leads to high ping times (latency) and significant delays during Webpage rendering.
